
Unit One: Eagle Eye Identifier
Go out and explore your backyard and local wild areas to use your eagle eye to identify wild plants! Each young forager will do a deep dive study about thirty plants growing around them to earn this badge.
Unit Two: The Safe Searcher
Understanding how to forage safely is the foundation we start with. Along with learning about how to verify the ID of edible plants before using them, you'll also study dangerous plants you might find. To earn this badge, young foragers will fill out foraging safety worksheets for edible plants they identify and will also record the identification on dangerous plants in their area.
Unit Three: The Wild Chef
After you discover the wild edible plants around you, you can experiment with including them in your diet. Getting to experience the new flavors and learning about the powerful nutrients found in these plants is a grand adventure! Each young forager will create twenty wild meals to earn this badge.
Unit Four: The Wild Healer
Along with using wild plants for food, you will also learn the ancient traditions of using plants for medicine. You will be guided on how to make simple herbal teas, salves, and other beginning herbal products to start using these amazing plants to improve your health. To earn this badge, young foragers will make herbal remedies and write nutritional reports on wild edibles.
Unit Five: Friend of the Wild Things
When we begin learning how to forage, it opens a door to learn more about the fascinating wild world around us. These wild plants don’t just benefit us; they help support the interconnected web of nature, providing food and shelter for wild animals and insects. The young foragers will study the connections between plants and wild animals, along with completing three projects to help the wildlife to earn this badge.
